Surface Syntax
Art and geometry have long shared a deep and dynamic relationship, especially in painting. Geometry provides structure, proportion, and harmony, while art infuses emotion, narrative, and visual exploration. Throughout history, artists relied on geometric principles to create balance, guide composition, and evoke meaning. From the precise perspective lines of the Renaissance to the abstract purity of modernism, geometry served as both a technical foundation and a conceptual framework. I explore this intersection in my own paintings. I often begin with a geometric skeleton—a grid, a set of intersecting lines, or a simple shape—which provides this piece’s architecture. This system creates a sense of order and rhythm, grounding the work in something universal and timeless. But within and around the underlying structure, I allow spontaneity, texture, and color to emerge organically, allowing the emotional tone of the painting to breathe and evolve. I am particularly interested in how geometry subtly influences the viewer's experience without overpowering the emotional content. A carefully placed square can draw the eye upward; a sphere can pull the viewer inward. In this way, my work attempts to balance intuition with intention, chaos with control. |
